True Stories About Real Women

Danish Study says NuvaRing has increased risk

SUMMARY: In this study of Danish women, the NuvaRing vaginal ring was associated with a 2.5 increased risk of a thrombotic stroke and a 2.1 increased risk of a myocardial infarction (MI), or heart attack.

Unlike several earlier studies that have assessed the risk of venous thromboembolism — i.e., blood clots in the veins causing deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or pulmonary embolism (PE) — with newer hormonal contraception such as YAZ and Yasmin birth control pills, this new Danish study about the NuvaRing focuses on clot risks in arteries, or arterial clots.
